Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for 1 in 4 each year and over 810,000 deaths total (CDC)? Did you also know that many of the biometric markers for heart disease can be symptom-free for years, but are easily seen on a simple blood test? And lastly, did you know that the majority of all chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimers, stroke, and diabetes) can be prevented or even reversed through healthy lifestyle behaviors (NCBI)? The numbers are in, and it is not pretty. Not only are chronic diseases killing Americans by the millions, we are also spending 90% of our country’s $3.3 trillion healthcare budget treating the symptoms of these diseases (CDC). While this staggering statistic exposes a glaring disaster on our hands, it also points to a tremendous opportunity for our times. Enough is enough. It is time for a systemic change, and it is going to come from those allied around wellness rather than illness. What better place to find that than at CrossFit boxes. Just this week, an article was publishedexpounding on CrossFit founder Greg Glassman’s goals of disrupting the current healthcare system, partnering with forward-thinking physicians, and reversing the tide of preventable disease epidemics in America. This is the work The Power House has been committed to since we opened our doors five years ago, and we couldn’t be more excited to see CrossFit HQ aligning their vision in this direction as well. We have celebrated as our clients have reversed diabetes, gotten off blood pressure medications, and lost significant sums of excess body weight. This has always been seen as our major goals, along with all the sweet performance PRs. By definition, many of our members are the exception to the chronic disease statistics. After all, we are CrossFitters! We are the fittest on earth; we couldn’t possibly have heart disease, right? But something we’ve noticed is that many of our athletes haven’t been to the doctor in years. They have no real idea what their biometric markers are and if they are a potential concern. Enter Win Your Life Day. With each registration for WYLD comes an Everlywell Heart Health Test, a comprehensive panel of labs that relate to overall heart health and common risk factors. |
What’s Measured & Why Total Cholesterol Cholesterol is necessary to make the cells in our body. We get cholesterol from two sources – our liver makes cholesterol and we can also get it from eating foods from animals. We measure cholesterol directly rather than a calculation. Direct LDL Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) is generally considered the “bad cholesterol” as it can deposit in arteries and lead to a condition known as atherosclerosis. LDL can be calculated mathematically using triglycerides and total cholesterol values or measured directly – this test measures LDL directly. HDL HDL, high-density lipoprotein, is considered the “good cholesterol” because it is able to carry cholesterol deposits away from arteries and back to the liver where it can be broken down and cleared from the body. Triglycerides Triglycerides are the primary form of fat in the blood. Fats can deposit in organs like the liver and pancreas and interfere with healthy functioning. HbA1c HbA1c is a measurement of the amount of glucose bound to the heme found in red blood cells. This measurement let’s you know how well your sugar levels have been controlled over the past 90 days. hs-CRP hs-CRP is a measure of C-reactive protein (CRP), a protein that the liver makes when there is inflammation in the body. While some inflammation in the body is beneficial to help protect organs from injuries or infections, excessive inflammation has been linked to heart disease and some autoimmune diseases. |
