Member Spotlight: Ian New
Meet Ian, one of our great St. Louis Park coaches! He was born in DC, grew up in Boston, and moved to Minnesota in 2013. He got into CrossFit because he had been working out on his own at LA Fitness for a while but hadn’t noticed any changes or progress. He read about CrossFit, all the pros and cons, and decided to commit himself to three months of CrossFit training regardless of enjoyment. Two weeks into his CrossFit training, he realized that he loved it. His coach at the time was his now-coworker, Meg Walters! Coaching wasn’t on Ian’s radar immediately when he started CrossFit as it didn’t seem like something that would fit in with his career, but he was always interested in movement and sports. He was asked to attend a CrossFit Level One seminar at Union Fitness and went in with an open mind. Three months later after internal training, he started coaching some on-ramp classes and progressed in the coaching atmosphere.
Ian worked at Union Fitness since April of 2016, and became a member of The Power House staff after The Power House acquired Union Fitness. We are extremely happy to have extended our fitness family with Ian! He loves to coach larger, more chaotic classes. There is more for him to look out for, to do, and to coach. Ian says that he loves being in a class with different levels of athletes, both fine-tuning experienced athletes and helping new members learn movements properly from the beginning. He enjoys doing the Helen workout and his favorite post-workout meal is a protein shake and Chinese food.
Ian’s favorite part of The Power House is the commitment from all levels of the community. “It’s been really great to see Max and Jill’s commitment to the community with the quality of the workouts, new equipment, and all of their overall efforts,” he says. Ian advises new members to “go into your first class with an open mind and try your hardest. You will be surprised with how much progress can be completed in such a short period of time. Don’t be afraid to try new things and make mistakes!”
Thank you, Ian, for all of your hard work on our staff!
